What is it all about……
The difference between this course and other academic courses is the following:
1. The content of what you say is not really that important, important is how you say it.
Can you express what you want to say in proper English?
Can the other person understand what you want to say?
.
2. Oral and written communication:
In oral communication the focus is on conveying a message or a question – forget the grammar
or using the correct words: Important is, can the other person understand what you want to say!!!
The focus is on fluent communication.
.
In written communication everything is important: convey a message or ask a question AND
ensure that you use the correct words and grammar!!!
.
3. What will you learn in this course?
a) Analyse the question : what is required / wanted?
b) Look at the instructions as to how you should answer it.
c) Supply the correct answer in proper English.
d) Ensure that the other person knows what you want or want to say.
.
4. The main difference between an academic course and this course:
a) In a regular academic course the focus is on subject matter, content.
b) In this course the focus is on language usage, not so much on content.
Example:
If questions are asked about your family, your field of study etc.,
your answers might be interesting, BUT are not really important!
Important is, can you answer those questions in proper English in a required format!
In a regular academic course the correctness of the content is important,
in this course that is irrelevant, important is:
a) did you understand the question?
b) did you answer the question in proper English in such a way that the other person
understood what you wanted to say (relevant to the question)?
Your response to a question must of course be correct when it comes to question and answer!!!
If the correct answer to: how many brothers do you have, is three, it’s irrelevant if you say :
“I have six brothers!”
BUT if you respond with: “I have two dogs!” – you clearly did not understand the question.
